Hospice & End of Life Care"Dr. Julius is the best and I highly recommended her. She is super knowledgeable and will really take the time to listen to your concerns. She came out to my house and helped my dog, Max, pass peacefully at home. I couldn't have asked for anyone more caring. She is a true animal lover and it shows." |
What is Hospice Care?
When your pet is facing a terminal illness, but you wish to allow them to live in comfort for as long as they are able, hospice care is available. Hospice care can be in the form of supportive care for pain, mental stimulation, caring for wounds, fluid therapy, mobility management, and anything else that arises throughout your pets final stages. Hospice care can also be utilized while you are expecting your beloved pet to pass at home.
Hospice care may last days or weeks to months, depending on the disease process. Dr. Shantel will help you decide what is best for your family and pet, and develop a plan tailored to your pet and your pets illness. This plan may include the other modalities Dr. Shantel offers, such as TCVM, acupuncture, chiropractic, food therapy, laser therapy, tPEMF, or it may simply be based on comfort by providing pain management, wound care, appetite stimulants, or any other service needed.

End of Life Care in the Comfort of Your Home
When a family decides it is time for their beloved pet to leave this world for their next adventure, Dr. Shantel can provide this compassionate service in the comfort of your home! When your family is ready, contact Dr. Shantel to schedule an in-home humane euthanasia. Dr. Shantel will provide all services related to the process, including after care in the form of humane cremation.
The process for an in-home humane euthanasia is very smooth and caring. When the family has invited Dr. Shantel to their home at a time convenient for the family, Dr. Shantel will walk the family through the process. Initially, she will take care of payment and paperwork, in order to get the formalities covered. Next, when the family is ready, Dr. Shantel will gently sedate your pet with a single injection subcutaneously. This injection is typically not painful, however it has rarely induced vomiting. When your pet has reached a level of relaxation and comfort, and you are ready for your final good-bye, Dr. Shantel will access a vein, typically using a back leg with a butterfly catheter, and slowly inject Pentobarbital, the euthanasia solution. This process is smooth, and your pet will take their last breaths within seconds to minutes. Dr. Shantel will then verify that your pet has passed by listening for a heartbeat with her stethoscope. Once she has verified your pet has passed, she will give you time to spend alone with your pet. Upon return, Dr. Shantel may make a clay pawprint for you, if you requested. This is included in all end of life services. The claw pawprint may be made away from the home, prior to cremation, if owner requests or if an individual cremation. Dr. Shantel will then take your pets body for cremation, unless you plan to bury them yourselves.
Options for body care are for the family to bury their pet on their own, individual cremation which allows ashes to be returned, or cremation with no ashes returned. Dr. Shantel utilizes Veterinary Hospital Association for cremation, and has used them for her own pets for several years. They are a compassionate, caring facility! Dr. Shantel personally delivers every pet to the crematorium herself the same day as the euthanasia, or the next business day if a weekend.
If you are having your pets ashes returned, you have the option of having them returned in a hardwood decorative box with name plate engraved (no extra charge), or an urn of your choosing (additional cost).
Dr. Shantel will deliver your pets ashes to you within 1 week, typically. Your pets ashes will be accompanied by a personalized cremation certificate and a clay paw print (if requested).
