The initial consult is a very important examination and discussion with Dr. Shantel.  The initial cost may be over-whelming, but what you and your pet receive in return is exceptional care and attention to detail that you have not ever experienced.  Your questions will be addressed and answered.

During this consult, depending on what your pet is being seen for, Dr. Shantel performs a very thorough physical exam, orthopedic exam, neurological examination, spinal manipulation exam, and Chinese Medical examination.  Dr. Shantel carefully assesses every joint of your pet, and for rehabilitation exams, takes measurements (goniometry) of each joint, as well as measures muscle mass.  These measurements are important to determine an objective measurement for compensatory changes in your pet.  She assesses acupuncture points associated with certain organ function and nerve function.  Dr. Shantel will also note pulse quality, tongue color, and the temperature of your pets ears, back, paw, and nose, all of which are factors important for a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) Pattern Diagnosis.  She combines all the information collected to make a plan based on Western Medicine and TCVM.  Dr. Shantel will also take a very thorough history of your pet.  Questions asked may include does your pet prefer warm or cold; is your pet a leader, follower, or fearful; what time of day do you notice problems; is there any association with food protein or carbohydrate source and your concerns, etc.  By combining the best modalities and assessments of both worlds, your pet will have the best care possible!

After the initial evaluation, Dr. Shantel will work closely with you to make a plan best suited for your pet.  This plan may include Acupuncture that day, laser therapy that day, a Home Exercise Program specially designed for your pets needs, herbal prescriptions, food therapy, Tui-Na massage and Tui-Na massage in home plan, traditional pain management options, and much much more!

Please expect this initial consult to take 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on which consult you choose.  And best of all - it takes place in the comfort of your home or at your horses barn!  This way your pet is not stressed from travel, and we do not get false positives or negatives due to fear, anxiety, or other external factors.  This is the most natural environment for your pet, and is the best illustration of your pet in their normal surroundings.  Dr. Shantel will communicate her findings with your regular veterinarian, and if diagnostics are needed, such as radiographs or lab work, your regular veterinarian will perform these.  Through open communication we will work together to guide your pet to its best self!
